Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters.

BB June 2022Some research suggests that CBD may be effective for certain types of pain, including nerve pain and back pain, when used on its own. However, it seems to be most effective when combined with THC. Here are 3 benefits and uses of CBD oil.

  1. Reduce PTSD Symptoms: About 7-8% of Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives, and roughly 8 million Americans live with PTSD in any given year, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Two recent studies point to the way that cannabinoids may help treat PTSD. One shows how cannabis can reduce activity in the amygdala – a part of the brain associated with fear responses to threats. Meanwhile, another suggests that the plant’s cannabinoids could play a role in extinguishing traumatic memories. Through its effects on the endocannabinoid system, CBD has been shown to help destroy bad memories and to help block reconsolidation, which is a process that is required for cementing them into long-term memory. A potential benefit of CBD over other agents that target the endocannabinoid system is that CBD does not tend to cause anxiety, whereas other agents typically used to treat PTSD can increase or decrease anxiety depending on their dosage. 2. Relieve Unmanageable Pain: Researchers have investigated the pain-relieving effects of CBD. A small 2020 randomized, placebo-controlled trial investigated the use of topical CBD oil on people with peripheral neuropathy of the legs. In this small study, participants with peripheral noncancer neuropathic pain received either 250 milligrams (mg) of CBD total dissolved in 3 oz of oil) or a placebo. After 4 weeks, the researchers noted a statistically significant reduction in intense pain, sharp pain, cold and itchy sensations in those using CBD oil. Participants did not report any side effects. 3. Offset Anxiety and Depression: CBD’s ability to calm is perhaps its most popular effect and the reason its use is so widespread. A 2017 study in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry tested the anxiety levels of 57 men in a simulated public speaking test. Some received a placebo while others received either 150 milligrams, 300 milligrams or 600 milligrams of CBD before their speeches. Those who received 300 milligrams of CBD experienced significantly reduced anxiety during the test compared to those who received the placebo. Interestingly, participants who received either 150 or 600 milligrams of CBD experienced more anxiety during the test than the 300 milligrams group.

CBD interacts with neuroreceptors in your endocannabinoid system, which sends signals between your cells to help regulate your movement, mood, homeostasis, and immune system.

Is CBD Oil Safe?

BB June 2022 16While no major health or safety concerns have been associated with the use of CBD oil alone, some drug interactions have been identified, particularly with blood thinners and glaucoma medications. If you’re currently taking other medications, we highly suggest speaking with your physician before adding CBD.
